North Curl Curl is mostly family homes on sloping streets between the headland, the lagoon and Dee Why, with bushland reserves threading through. A lot of the housing is postwar brick and fibro that has been extended, plus a steady stream of knockdown rebuilds. Beaches Blocked Drains connects North Curl Curl homes with licensed local drain plumbers.
What causes blockages here
Roots are the regular culprit. Clay sewer lines from the original homes are now well past their best, and the gums and banksias in reserves and gardens push into the joints. If a drain has blocked more than once, roots are worth ruling in or out with a camera.
Sloping blocks change how drains behave. Water and waste move quickly down steep runs, but bends and junctions near the bottom of the block collect debris. Stormwater pits on the low side of a property also take whatever the slope sends them, including soil, gravel and mulch.
Close to the cliffs and beach, salt air and wind-blown sand add to the mix, especially for outdoor gullies and older metal downpipes.
How it gets cleared
The plumbers we refer usually run a CCTV drain camera first, then use jet blasting to clear roots and debris back to the pipe wall. If the camera shows cracked joints, pipe relining seals them from inside, which avoids digging up a sloping garden or a new driveway.
What it costs
A standard clear typically runs $150 to $400. Tree root clearing typically runs $250 to $600. A camera inspection on its own typically runs $249 to $600. Relining typically starts around $3,000. The quote comes before the work.
Frequently asked questions
We are planning a rebuild. Should we check the drains first?
Yes. A camera inspection shows whether the existing private sewer can be reused or should be replaced while the site is open, which is the cheapest time to do it.
Why does the drain at the bottom of our yard overflow?
It is usually the lowest point in the stormwater system, so it takes everything the slope delivers. Silt and leaves in the pit or line are the common cause, and jetting clears it.
Do roots come from the reserve or my garden?
Either. Roots travel a long way toward moisture. The camera shows where they enter the pipe, which matters more than which tree they came from.
