Beacon Hill sits high above Brookvale and Dee Why, with homes on hillside blocks, views to the ocean and bushland reserves running along the edges. Most of the housing is postwar brick and later, and a good share still has its original drainage underneath. Beaches Blocked Drains connects Beacon Hill residents with licensed local drain plumbers.
Why Beacon Hill drains block
The hill shapes everything. Sewer lines often run steeply down the block toward the street, or across it to a main in a rear easement. Easement mains are common in hilly suburbs, and they can make it harder to work out where your responsibility ends. Rear-of-block access is often down stairs or through side paths.
Roots are the usual cause of repeat blockages. Clay sewer pipes with aged joints sit close to the gums and other trees in gardens and reserves. Where the soil is clay-rich, seasonal swelling and shrinking loosens the joints further.
Stormwater from steep blocks arrives quickly at the bottom pit, carrying soil and leaf litter, and that pit is often the first thing to block.
How the plumbers we refer handle it
A CCTV drain camera with a locator traces the line and finds the fault, which is especially useful when the sewer runs to an easement at the back. Jet blasting clears roots and silt. If joints have cracked, pipe relining seals them without digging up a terraced garden.
What it costs
A standard clear typically runs $150 to $400. Root clearing typically runs $250 to $600. A camera inspection typically runs $249 to $600, or $350 to $900 combined with jetting. The quote comes before any work.
Frequently asked questions
Our sewer runs to an easement at the back. Whose pipe is it?
Your private line runs from the house to the point of connection with the Sydney Water main. If the main itself runs through your property in an easement, the main is Sydney Water's. A camera and locator show exactly where the fault sits.
Why does the drain only block in winter?
Wetter months mean more groundwater, more soil movement and roots that are already established in the pipe. The roots were there all year, the wet weather just tips it over.
Can equipment get to the back of a steep block?
Usually, yes. Jetting hoses and camera reels are long and portable. Tell us about the access when you enquire.
