Collaroy Plateau sits high above the beach, with streets of postwar and 1960s homes, sweeping views and some of the steepest blocks on the Beaches dropping toward Collaroy and Narrabeen. The ground here moves, and drains feel it. Beaches Blocked Drains connects Collaroy Plateau residents with licensed local drain plumbers.
Why Collaroy Plateau drains block
Clay soils are the defining factor. Much of the plateau and its slopes sits on clay-rich ground that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Parts of the escarpment are also known for slope instability, and council has geotechnical controls in some areas. Rigid clay sewer pipes laid in moving ground crack and separate at the joints over time.
Once joints open, roots follow. Established gardens and street trees send feeder roots into the gaps, and the familiar cycle of repeat blockages begins.
Stormwater is the other concern. On steep blocks, water arrives fast and carries soil with it. A blocked stormwater line or pit on a slope can also send water into the ground where it is least wanted, which matters on unstable land.
How it gets fixed
The plumbers we refer usually start with a CCTV drain camera to see whether joints have separated and where. Jet blasting clears roots and silt. Where the camera finds displaced or cracked joints, pipe relining creates a continuous pipe with no joints to pull apart, without excavating a steep block.
Keeping stormwater flowing properly matters here. See blocked stormwater for more.
What it costs
A standard clear typically runs $150 to $400. Root clearing typically runs $250 to $600. Relining typically costs $3,000 to $8,000 or more depending on length and access. You get the price before any work.
Frequently asked questions
Why does our sewer keep cracking?
Ground movement. Reactive clay and sloping land put stress on rigid pipe joints. A camera inspection shows where the pipe has moved.
Does a leaking drain matter on a slope?
It can. Water leaking from a broken stormwater or sewer pipe adds moisture to the ground. If your block is on a slope, getting leaks fixed is worth doing promptly, and council or a geotechnical engineer can advise on site-specific risk.
Can relining be done on a steep block?
Yes. Relining happens inside the pipe through existing access points, so the slope above is not disturbed.
